I found some really interesting information in the dell board.
Maybe them solve your problem anyway.

Hi John,
I have the same problem. I bought a Dell Inspiron 6400 (/E1705) with
SigmaTel Audio-Chip and found it more or less very basic to
configurate.
I will try to buy the Update-Software-Suite to full Sound Blaster
Audigy ADVANCED MB hoping this will allow me to playback input audio
directly. The installed software (Creative Mixer) shows the differences
between my current audio-chip and the advanced one. There it says
integrated audio recording will be possible by updating to the advanced
version.
The Update will cost 19$ (Dell wants to have about 30€(!) for the
same).
Did you have bought this update?
The Dell Support could not tell me exactly what the differences are.
If the update will help me to playback an external radio plugged into
Line-In or Microphone, I will tell you.
Greets,
B.P.

Actually I realized the problem occurs even if not connected to a stereo.
I.e. I plug my guitar into my computer, unmute the line-in, play, and no
sound comes out. Yet, I can hit record, and play it back. How can I hear
while I play?

I don't have a problem connecting my comp to my stereo. The issue is with
the guitar going through the computer to the stereo as well. Thanks for the
info anyways.

Here is what I want to be able to do:
I have my guitar hooked up to the Line-In of my Dell Inspiron E1705. It
uses a 1/4 inch cord, which i plug into an 1/8 inch adapter to acheive this.
Next, I have a stero plugged into the headphone jack of my computer using
another 1/8 inch plug. I want to hear both music from my computer, and my
guitar at the same time.
Problems:
First, when I plug in my guitar and play, no sound comes through (even if I
unplug the stereo and use the built in speakers. But, I know the signal is
getting through because I am able to record using a recording studio program.
Second, unless I have the 1/4 inch cord plugged extremely loosely into the
1/8 adapter (i.e. not all the way in), the computer only picks up the left
channel of the signal.
My audio playback/recording "device" is Sigma Tel Audio, which I find to be
extremely basic and lacks any real options. Creative Sound Blaster Audigy
ADVANCED MB is also installed.
What is the problem and how can I fix it?
