I think you have surmised the inevitable. Your CD-Rom needs to be replaced.
You can go to eBay and get them very cheap. You'll only have to remove a
couple of screws and disconnect the power and data cables to install a new
drive. A repair shop will charge $40 just for the labor plus the cost of a
new drive. You
can get a CD burner or also a DVD/CD burner combination and should come with
an installation disk. All you do is remove the old one, install the new one
and reboot. WindowsXP will let you know that new hardware was found and just
follow the prompts. Good luck. :~)
