Audio Stuttering

I am trying to figure out why my pc stutters when playing back MP3s or
playing games. It has done this for a long time. I can't really find anythign
on the web to help. From viewing others with similar problems, I think I am
able to narrow it down to the XP o/s. People have talked about memory issues,
hardware issues, driver issues, etc...but there appears to be nothing in
common except XP. I have updated all of my audio/video drivers and checked
background programs. I'm not running enough to suck up the memory.

Any ideas on how to fix this? It's driving me NUTS!
