I'm using movie maker 6.0 and I'm able to edit and publish a movie.
When I play the movie in powerpoint 2003 it hangs up. I've tried a
dozen different video clips, each video downloaded from you-tube
plays fine in powerpoint before editing and publishing them. The
stopping point differs in each video, they don't stop at the same
point in time.

Sometimes in movie maker I have the same problem when I try to play a
video that has been edited, the video will freeze and the sound may
continue.

I've already downloaded the essentials codec pack.

Help please with any suggestions.

Sounds like your clips are not fully compatible
with Movie Maker. Have you tried converting
to.wmv before you import them?

Maybe Windows Media Encoder would be useful:

How do I convert other video file formats to WMV?

Also...if you are adding .mp3 music files...
convert them to .wma:

How to convert .mp3 to .wma
using Windows Media Encoder

Open Windows Media Encoder

On the New Session screen / Wizards tab...
choose...Convert a file / OK

On the File Selection screen...browse to the
..mp3 Source File you wish to convert

Also browse to and select a save folder and
enter a name for your converted file /
Save button / Next

On the Content Distribution screen I usually
choose 'File Archive' / Next / Finish.

When you see the 'Encoding Results' screen
the task is complete.
