Just a few ideas.....
Sounds like resource issues...and it's also
possible that the project is too complex with
many transitions and effects.
Also you may have some incompatibility
issues with your source files. Have a look

Installing more RAM would certainly be an
improvement. It could also be worth a try to
increase the size of your Virtual Memory

Might be worth a try to disconnect from the
net and close all programs...especially virus
scanners before opening Movie Maker.
Sometimes it can improve performance to
run Disk Cleanup, Error Checking and Defrag.
It also may be a good idea to create several
smaller projects and save them as movies.
Then re-import them and join them together.
