I updated my website's Import Movie Source Files > Video > Video Codecs page
yesterday.... to both shed some light on and add confusion to your thinking
about video compressors in XP and Vista. Here's a copy of the info on the
bottom of the revised page...
From XP to Vista or Vista to XP
How well do video files made by VirtualDub in XP work in Vista's Home Basic
MM6?
a.. uncompressed - OK
b.. Microsoft WV9 - OK
c.. Xvid MPEG4 - OK with the ffsdhow codec installed
d.. PICVideo Motion JPEG - OK with the ffsdhow codec installed
e.. Panasonic DV - OK with the Panasonic DV codec installed
f.. those compressed with these codecs didn't work at all: Tech Smith
Screen Capture, PCLEPIXL, Intel Indeo 4.5, Indeo 5.10, Canopus DV
g.. Divx 6.8 and Cinepak imported to MM6 but showed as black video in the
collection preview
h.. Microsoft Video 1 played upside down
i.. Microsoft MPEG4-V1 and V3 went to the timeline but rendered to
blackness
j.. Microsoft MPEG4-V2 rendered OK by itself, but to blackness when mixed
on the timeline with other type clips
k.. Helix 1420 YUV rendered to cartoonish colors... kind of neat for a
special effect.
How well do video files made by VirtualDub in Vista work in XP's MM2.1? All
of them worked fine on my system
a.. uncompressed
b.. PICVideo Motion JPEG
c.. Panasonic DV - OK with the Panasonic DV codec installed
d.. Microsoft Video 1
e.. Intel IYUV
f.. Intel IYUV 1420
g.. ffdshow
h.. Cinepak
If you're confused by all this, you're normal. Different compression codecs
can result in significantly different performance... when you figure out
what works on on your systems and those of your viewers, use them.
