Re: Movie Maker Issues in Vista

If you've only got 2MB of RAM, you don't event have enough to boot
into Windows. I'm assuming you mean 2GB? (1,000 times as much :)

John's suggestion is good, but it should be perfectly doable in WMM.
You don't need speed or processing power to MAKE a movie... you need
it to PLAY a movie. Your computer will take as much time as it needs
to make your movie.

What I recommend is choosing an output format that fits your intended
audience. So the next questions are: Who is your intended audience?
How are they expected to view your movie?

Your answers to those questions could have a big impact on how you
choose to generate the movie.

As far as I can tell, your hardware is more than sufficient to play
back a movie, unless your hard drive is severely fragmented and you
chose a movie output format with an extremely high bit rate and/or
your got other software running simultaneously with the movie
playback, stealing both CPU time and RAM. I'd shut down everything
but Windows itself and try to play the movie.

But again, you may have chosen a bit rate and resolution that's far
above what's needed.

Let us know.

Hello:
I just bought a new computer, HP 9500. It is running Nvidia 8600, Intel duo
core at 2Ghz and 2MB of Ram.
I put together about 28 still photos and tried to make a movie out of them
with the suggested settings and added backround music. It jumps like an old
projector in spots.

Do I have enough computer to use MS Movie Maker? It is an HP laptop that I
just bought in Costco for $1489.00.

I have been only a windows guy forever and hope this Vista frustration that
I am feeling goes away before I look elsewhere.

I can't say for sure what the problem is, but I'd guess the following:

1. You've got auto-updates tuR DO THIS!!! It's OK to
have it set to auto-download, but NOT to auto-install. This causes
Windows to reboot when you're not expecting (imaging working on a
project, forgetting to save it, going to bed, waking up the next
morning only to find that Windows rebooted itself and lost all your
work!)
2. One of the updates was probably a DRM (Digital Rights Management)
updated to Windows Media Player. If you have Windows set to NOT auto-
install updates, you'll instead get a list of available updates. I've
been avoiding installing the DRM updates. Vista is overly paranoid
about copyrights and uses up too much of your CPU constantly checking
for ridiculous things like wether the voltage on certain components
has changed oddly, assuming you're fiddling in the PC with a soldering
iron or something, trying to tap into the encrypted video stream.
This could explain the choppiness after an update.

Hello All,

I have been having a terrible time withMovieMakerand have decided to come
to the experts. It is beyond me what is happening here. I have now reformated
and reinstalledVista3 times in an attempt to getMovieMakerStable and I
just can't seem to get there. In the brief moments I get it working its
great.

I have a Canon HV20 (Not sure if you guys need that info) and shoot inHD
100% of the time.

In my latest reformat/reinstall effort (yesterday) I testedMoviemaker
after only installing my audio/video drivers. It worked perfect. I then added
my software one program at a time rebooting after every install. Once I went
through this process (adding all my software)MovieMakerwas running great.

I went to bed (Big mistake)

When I woke up this morning I noticedWindowsdid some auto updates (this
may be where the issue is - not sure). Nothing else happened that I know of
to the machine. I went intoMovieMakerand noticed when I tried to play amovie(HD) it was choppy (not like that last night). I then went to imprt a
video and from that point on MM would not respond. It just clocked. I could
not even stop the process through Task Manager. Once it gets to that point
you have to shut down to stop it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am desperate at this point and do
not know how to fix this issue.

Thanks all!!!- Hide quoted text -
