We've found that dealing with MM can be problematical. It is also funny how
something that doesn't appear to have any relationship to a problem can in
fact be the cure, so by ruling out all the usual suspects firsts often means
we get to the bottom of the problem.
Lets start at the very beginning.
What file types do you have on the timeline?
Is it always the same transition that fails, or can you drop any transition
on as the third and it fails?
I don't have vista on at teh moment, but will have again next week, so if we
haven't sorted it by then I can try to repro it here. I must say though
when beta testing vista, I never had this problem at all.

Graham:
I have been in the technology business for 31 year as a code writer and
network engineer. Having worked on complex systems involving hardware and
software for that long my gut is telling me this not a driver problem for
the
following reasons;
1. The number of people out there having similar issues with transistions
would make it highly unlikley that we are all using the same graphics
card.
It is also highley unlikely that a large sample of cards would have
problems
with this particular feature of MM.
2. A driver probllem would exhibit some signs of consitency when testing
the
problem. IE Lets say we had a memory leak problem which was aggrevated by
putting to many tansistions in the timeline. That problem would always
occur
when faced with the same set of circumstances. The fact that I can get
everything working by playing around with the timeline and then just
saving
and reloading the project causes the problem to come back kinda of leads
me
in another direction.
Obvously I could be wrong until we find the actual problem.

MM in vista uses the graphics processor unit, gpu, to process transitions
etc in work in progress, so it has everything to do with whether they
work.
As to why it works sometimes and not others, is well, a problem that
could
be casued by anything and is the same in all walks of life, why can't I
remember someone's name one day to the next :)
John has alreay explained where to get it from.
Are you running vista 64bit?

vista does have it's own newsgroup atStore bought. Movie Maker was already installed

Is this a shop bought vista machin or have you upgraded?
Have you checked you have the latest vista compatible graphics card
drivers?
What are the machine specs?

Just started using MM 6 on Vista.Did some more playing around and it looks like the transition
When working in a timeline or storyboard after I add the third
transistion
between clips the preview screen goes black and I cannot play the
timeline or
the story board. Take out the thrid transistion and everythng comes
back.
Anybody else having this problem?
Thanks
problem
is a
little broader then just adding the third. By playing with the
durations
of
the transistions I got more then four to work. Played the timeline
all
the
way through and then saved the project. Reopened the project and the
preveiw
screen is black and will not play.
Not sure what the graphics drivers would have to do with transitions
working
sometimes and sometimes not. If a driver was bad you would think it
would
be
all or nothing. Anyway I did all of the windows updates and it says all
is
up
to date. Are you thinking of something specific?
Thanks I will check out the other newsgroup.
