avi is just a wrapper, you need to use Gspot as John recommended or avicodec
is easy to use, to find out what sort of avi it is.
dv.avi will work
divx.avi, xvid.avi, mpeg.avi, mjpeg.avi rarely, if ever, do.

i tried what you said and still nothing by the way the video type is avi

i lowered my graphics hardware and its still black i just can't see it
only
in the preview. any other suggestions

Two possibles:

If you reduce your Graphics Hardware
Acceleration as per the instructions in
the following article and realize an
improvement, it's an indication that you
need to update your video driver:

And...you may have some incompatibility
issues with your source files. Have a look
