It's a limitation on the camcorder I think.

The DV-AVI option is only available via a firewire connection.
If connecting with USB you can't save as DV-AVI.
I very much recommend you get a firewire cable DV-AVI aside you will be much
happier with the result if you use firewire.

Thanks for all the help, I'm going to buy a Firewire cable and
expansion card asap. Just a question: since USB 2.0 can transfer data
at up to 480Mb/sec, is this a limitation on Movie Maker, or on the
camcorder? It isn't a limitation of the USB specification.
