take my content such as jpg files or film footage that I
have brought in from my video camera as strictly bmp,
.wmv, and .wma. Thats a lot of work and waste of time
when jpgs, .mpgs, and .mp3 are fairly standard formats.

I mean that converting the source files to different formats can sometimes eliminate errors.

divxaf.ax codec - looked for this file on my machine but
the search tool returns no results. However there are a
number of other codecs i guess I can spend the rest of

I'm not positive that the 2.0 version has
the following option but it may be worth a look. Open Movie Maker and go to...
Tools / Options / Compatibility tab..

You will see the installed codecs and their path. Also you can disable them.

Before I spend a greater amount of time hunting little
codec gophers in the first article you referenced, how
can I ensure a 2.1 download update. Can't microsoft make
this easier?

If you are running WinXP SP2 and do not have Movie Maker 2.1, there are two possible ways to update.

1) Download and install a copy of SP2 from the link I previously posted for you.

2) Read the following articles:

What can I do if I upgrade to Windows
XP SP2 and Windows Movie Maker 2.1
is not installed successfully?
