Re: Movie Maker not working & unable to get updated the latest!

It's Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002 Service pack 2, by HP.
When I had purchased the MM was showing Ver 1.0 and suggested to upgrade.
When Automatic updates done ON so many downloads were done.
I have NORTON, 2006 but after some updation, Norton started misbehave like
and took to their automated site with some error codes and advised to
un-install and then re-install.
Since, then problems have started and NORTON is also not getting
re-installed, with the same messages.
System was also crashed and could be recovered by XP, itself in safe mood.
Now, all the other things are working but this Windows installer is
continously working. So many things are suggested but its not working
properly.
Norton online check didn't found any virus, and also the Microsoft softwares.
I have re-installed MM with HP, but the position is same and its not working..
Should i run XP full recovery, then what will be the status of files and
programs? will it re-install MM with ver 2.1?
Or, should I download SP2 and run, but I dont think windows installer will
work and will be able to re-install it..
Hope to hear soon favourably from you.
Thanks and Regards,

If you are showing SP2 when you right click the My Computer icon and select
properties, you will have a functioning SP 2 on your system and don't need
to rerun the patch (although I have done it before to solve a different
problem with one of my systems.) It won't hurt your system to rerun the
full SP 2 but you may have rerun the follow-up patches. Are you using the
English version of XP?

Have you run a full virus and malware scan with one good updated antivirus
program (free scanners are available from Trend Micro at www.antivirus.com
and also Symantec) and at least two malware scanners (AdAware and SpyBot are
my free favorites?)

If you are having these problems with other software I suspect other
problems than a misconfigured MM. I still don't know why MM1 shows on your
system when, if SP2 is installed, MM2.1 is the version that should show.

the file moviemk exists and is run by shortcut. position is same, the same
message is coming. I do have windows XP SP2, already on my system. Do I
still
need to download SP2 and re-install it, as suggested by you.
Thanks,

XP SP2 includes MM version 2.1 and was installed with the service pack.
You
may have both versions on the computer (according to Papa John both can
peacefully coexist.) You should find the 2.1 version in C:\Program
Files\Movie Maker and it is called moviemk.exe. Go to that location and
attempt to run the program located there. If you start the program
successfully click Help and then about for the version number.

The other problem which I missed in your original post is that you have
apparently had a failed installation of either SP2 or some later updates.
I
recommend that you right click on My Computer and then click on
properties.
You should see the version of XP on the computer. It should read
Microsoft
Windows XP on the line after System: then the next line should be the
version you have installed (Home, Pro. etc.) then the Version should be
2002
and then any SP you have installed. If SP2 does not show go to this web
site
to see what needs to be done to successfully install the SP2 files.
http://michaelstevenstech.com/ I had one computer that SP2 would not
install on until I followed all the instructions listed on this web site.

I also recommend that the following SP2 installation file be downloaded
from
Microsoft and then installed instead of using the auto update for the
SP2.
This is a large download (170 MB). Watch wrap on the URL also.

Thanks for prompt reply!
I have windows XP with SP2.. which has MM1, while trying upgradation on
site
was unsuccessful and now MM! has stopped working and says: "Windows
Movie
Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for
the
inconvenience", and sends a report to microsoft. No response comes back
after
sending report!
This is happening with other so many programs too and only after
activating
Automatic Windows Updates, which started downloading various updates.

MM1 is a pre-Windows XP SP2 version or that which was included with
Windows
ME. If you are using XP you need to upgrade your operating system to
SP2.
This will install MM 2.1 onto your computer. If you are using Win ME,
you
are out of luck since there is no upgrade path to the newer version of
MM.
