DVD Burning

I tried to burn a DVD and got a failure.
I used a Maxell DVD+RW "Up to 4X, 4.7GB 2 hrs."

I tried again using Maxell DVD-R "Up to 8X, 4.7GB 2 hrs."
This was successful.

I this because of the "4X" vs "8X?" or did it have something to do with the
+RW vs -R?
I asked Nero but it takes a week or two for them to answer....
