No, that would be your last resort....

First you need to be sure the project needs splitting due to your memory
limits... if it's a memory issue than splitting doesn't involve replacing
source files.

But if it's not a memory issue and you need to get into your source files...
try stripping your project of all files but the audio/music ones... save it
to a movie and, being audio/music only, it'll save it to a WMA file.... if
that renders and plays fine, it can be your new source file in WMV format
without having to convert each file and doing re-editing.
