Easy DVD movie question?

HI! what format to DVD players use? I mean like to one's you buy for your
TV. I want to burn some media on dvd format but I am not sure what file
formats DVD players can use.

Example: avi, mpeg, xdiv, mov, ect... ?

ps. I was not sure where to ask this question so please forgive me if this
is the wrong place. :)
