Dave,

Here's a copy of my raw database notes about converting MOV files to
something else, those in addition to Rad Video Tools converting to AVI.

MOV to AVI
===========
Windows Media Encoder - 3/6/03 - seanmc - There is a way... I found (by
accident I admit) that if you have QT loaded on your machine and you load
the LEAD video codec (an avi codec) suddenly WM9 encoder will be able to
encode from QT movs. This worked well for me using the PhotoJpeg compressor
of QT. Give it a shot. > response from Alessandro Angeli - You have been
very lucky ;) WMP, since v6.4, uses a DirectX component called DirectShow to
playback everything. DirectShow is a framework that uses a number of
multimedia plugins (called filters) to construct a filter chain (called
graph) that will play the file. DirectShow includes by itself a MOV file
parser (which more or less understands also QT4 MOVs, since the basic
structure didn't change from QT2), but lacks the ability to use installed QT
codecs to decode the audio and video inside the MOV, so DirectShow can only
playback a MOV file that contains audio and video compressed with codecs for
which a DirectShow compatible decoder exists, for example QT codecs for
which a corresponding AVI codec is installed (up to QT2, common QT codecs
also existed as AVI codecs, like Cinepack, which are included in Windows,
but this is no longer the case with most newer codecs like Sorenson's video
and most audio codecs) or for which an equivalent DirectShow decoder is
installed. In your case, the video is QTJpeg I guess, which can be decoded
by LEAD's MCMP/MJPEG DirectShow decoder (and I guess other MJPEG
codecs/decoders), and I suppose you either have no audio or PCM audio, thus
everything works fine. But most MOVs use movie-oriented audio/video codecs
for which no equivalent DirectShow decoder exists. Besides, the DirectShow
MOV parser seems to always think that a MOV contains QTJpeg video, no matter
what, so it still works for you but not in other cases.

MOV to MPG
============
TMPGenc is a free MPG encoder and with the MOV file enabler, will allow
your to take MOV files and encode into MPG1 or MPG2. You can even save it as
an avi file. Both are available in the Tools section at
http://www.vcdhelp.com (posted by Steve on 11/9/02)

8/20/03 post - you can download tmpenc - you will need a quicktime plug in
to work with that type also you can find the info at dvdhelp.com under
conversions

MOV to WMV or ASF
=================
Adobe Premiere

RAD Video Tools - 11/2/02 post by Phillip Roncoroni - You'll need to convert
the MOVs to AVIs first. You can do that with "RAD Video Tools," which are
free. The audio may become out of sycn with the video by about one to
seconds however, but as far as I know, it's the only way to extract Apple's
proprietary video formats and convert them into another format.

TMPGENC - 11/3/02 post by Jabba - use to convert to MPEG - but you need an
additional plugin for TMPGENC to recognize MOV files - called QTReader.
ENcoder will then take mpg to wmv

VidtoASF (a utility in Windows Media Tools - see Convert VID to ASF
record) - 11/1/02 posting -There's a catch with VidToAsf: it only supports
MOV files that use the same codecs that are available in AVIs, which means
it won't work with MOV files that use QT-only codecs and that's the case
with all QT codecs released in the last few years. Beside, since it doesn't
recompress the audio/video streams, it will create valid ASF files but not
compressed with the WMV/WMA codecs
