No preview of still images from Storyboard/Timeline

I am using MM 2.0.3312.0 with Windows XP Home, SP1. For months I have been
unable to preview still images of any kind (JPEG, BMP, TIFF) from the
storyboard/timeline although they show up in the preview window from the
Collection pane.
Video clips run fine from the Storyboard/Timeline.
It is only still images that don't show up, and only from the Storyboard.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling MM, DirectX, WMP etc. as several
you have suggested but to no avail.
I am using an M6807 eMachine and have read that the SP2 in some cases causes
conflicts with the AMD-64 bit chip so I have not upgraded yet.

It seems like several people have encountered this problem but am I correct
in surmising there is to date no hard and fast solution? Or understanding of
the cause?

I find it bizarre that the images in the Collections Pane show up in the
Preview Pane but not imags from the Storyboard.
Likewise, that video from the Storyboard does but not images.
It seems like that should isolate the problem to a certain routine that MM
uses.

Anyhow, any advice is apperciated, thanks for your time,

Piper
