AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave, and AVI as a file
extention doesn't really tell you the format of the
encoded (or raw) video.

The AVI format used to capture video in most still digital
cameras is actually MJPEG. This is simply a sequence of
JPEG-compressed images - one image for each frame. Each
frame is compressed individually without using an information
about adjacent frames.

MPEG VX is a form of MPEG compression that compresses
each frame/field in a similar manner, but also uses
information from adjacent frames/fields to perform motion
prediction/estimation, which enables greater compression
ratios (i.e. smaller file sizes).

I don't think you'll find any still digital camera that
captures video to DV-AVI. The file size would simply be
much to large to efficiently store on a flash memory card.

As far as compatiblity goes, the AVI (MJPEG) format seems
to work very well with Movie Maker. I've imported lots of
those files from my Canon G2 digital camera. I've never tried
importing MPEG VX specifically, but as John said, MPEG and
Movie Maker generally do not work well together. So you
would need to perform a conversion before you could use
that video in Movie Maker.
