john
thanks for your help. the windv worked great. i downloaded it and it plays the avi just fine but i'm still getting the stuttering. i've changed the cable and get same result.

I have an email into canon support but the camera works fine with apple's i movie so i suspect it may be in the card. i presume that's what you meant by "car"

i'll keep you informed. your web page looks very interesting. we're oral poets working in a very old tradition. you can hear what we sound like by going to www.soulspeak.org and clicking on RECORDINGS then on MANY VOICES

     Hi there,

First off, instead of saving back to your camera, try saving it to a
DV-AVI file instead. Obviously check that the playback of that file is
     acceptable.

Then get yourself a copy of WinDV its a free utility who's only role in
life is to move DV-AVI either to or from a Digital camera. You will find a
link to it on my website LINKS > GRAPHICS > VIDEO Use that program to move
the file mentioned above onto your camera. Lots of people have said good
things about WinDV...so you should be fine doing it that way.

If this fails to give better results then in whatever order you wish...

     1) Suspect the firewire cable
     2) Suspect the car the cable is connected to
     3) Suspect the camera itself
