The Firewire port is very similar to a USB port.

USB ports became popular beginning in the mid 1990's. USB version 1.1 and
now USB version 2.0 (2.0 is exceptionally faster than USB 1.1 vers.).

Firewire is comparable to USB version 2.0 as regards how fast data is
transfered. For video input, the faster of the two is preferred, either
Firewire or USB 2.0. USB 1.1 may be too slow for video data transfer,
especially if you have multiple USB devices attached to your PC.

If you don't have a Firewire port on your PC and need one, you can purchase
a PCI expansion card which should contain two Firewire ports. I recently
purchased a PCI card with 4 - USB 2.0 ports. There are also PCI expansion
cards which contain two or three USB 2.0 ports along with two Firewire
ports. The ports for USB and Firewire are different in design so that you
don't need to worry about plugging the wrong wire into the wrong port.

QUESTION: Do you in fact need a Firewire port?

If you aren't sure and can't seem to determine, either ask a salesman in the
store which sold the DVD camcorder or post the Brand / Model # here.
Someone should be able to find out for you.

If you need the expansion card for Firewire or USB 2.0, you can order online
via the Internet from one of many computer part warehouses or go to a store
such as Best Buys or Circuit City. The expansion cards aren't very
expensive. If you Hitachi DVD camcorder didn't come with a Firewire cable,
you'll need to purchase one.
