No audio in Windows Live Messenger

I have both Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo IM installed with Windows XP
Home SP2.. A friend in Germany has the same. We have been using Yahoo to
make Computer to Computer calls but, because of poor audio quality from time
to time, decided to try Windows Live. We both ran call set-up Wizards OK.
However, neither of us can hear the other one when we make the call. Switch
back to Yahoo and the audio is there. We are NOT running them at the same
time. We exit one before starting the other. Any ideas?
