Hi,

Yes, Windows Live Messenger 8.1. Remote Assistance in 8.1 requires Windows Messenger 5.1
to
be installed (as per my original message).

As long as you get the latest Windows Messenger on there (per my original message), RA
will
work.

Jonathan,

fyi... it was 8.1 that I installed on a relative's computer. I went back
and found that they had not had Windows updates applied for a very, very long
time. When I tried to apply the updates they failed -- but that's another
issue.

Any chance that the reason I can't do Remote Assistance with that computer
is because other Windows components have not been updated in so long?

Thanks - Dave

Greetings Dave,

What it means is you need the latest version of Windows Messenger (note: not Live)
installed.

Remote Assistance utilizes the Windows Messenger API to work properly, which requires
Windows
Messenger installed. Just having Windows LIVE Messenger installed, isn't good enough.

You can grab Windows Messenger here:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a8d9eb73-5f8c-4b9a-940f-9157a3b3d774

After this you can continue to use Windows Live Messenger and Remote Assistance will
work.

Hello.

I just installed version 8.1 on a new PC. When I try to request remote
assistance for that PC, or request remote assistance of that PC, I receive
these error messages:

"Your invitation was not sent because you need the latest version of
Messenger to use the Remote Assistance feature. Please go to the Windows Live
Messenger update site to install the latest version."

"?????? wants to use the Remote Assistance feature with you, but you need to
update your version of Messenger first. Please go to the Windows Live
Messenger update site to install the latest version."

Why am I being promted to get a new version, which I think doesn't exist?

Thanks - Dave
