Are you referring to a "Windows Live Today" page that opens in your web browser? On the Tools menu there is an "Options..." pop-up with a "general" tab. Look for a "Show Windows Live Today after signing into Messenger" check box to turn off.

There is also an "Always on top" that you can un check on the "Tools" menu.

Options -> General, then uncheck "Start Windows Live Today" when messenger signs in
