Annoying/wierd problem with MSN Messenger

Hi
I'd be very grateful if someone can help me. I'm reasonably technically
literate but having been having a wierd problem with MSN Messenger for
a while now, and I've had a thorough google for a solution (which
brought me to this group), but haven't found an answer so far.
So, I'm running XP SP2, Messenger 7.5, I have a Logitech Quickcam
communicate STX, and I also use an 'M-Audio' Firewire 410 external
soundcard (although my PC does also have an internal soundcard,
integrated with the motherboard kinda thing).
What I want to do is have webcam conversations using video and voice.
So, let's take a particular friend of mine. He has XP SP2, latest
version of messenger, bog standard onboard soundcard, and also has a
quickcam communicate STX. We start up an MSN Messenger text chat (works
fine), then I 'start a video conversation' using the little camera icon
under my picture. After a little while, his video appears - I can see
him fine. My video appears at his end - he can see me fine. My audio
arrives at his end - he can hear me fine... but I can't hear him.
So next I run the 'audio and video setup' tool. Where the wierd problem
arrives is right at the first step: 'Step 1: Speaker setup'. The drop
down box allows me to choose what speakers/headset I want to use. In
the drop down box there's quite a few options; I know the one I want to
use is called 'M-Audio FW 410 1/2' - it's the one I use in all my other
audio apps, and it's the main L+R audio out from my soundcard. (The
soundcard works fine, incidentally, in every other context - system
sounds, winamp, you name it).
I pick 'M-Audio FW 410 1/2'. The speaker volume fader at the right then
jumps immediately down to the bottom. If I try to drag it up, it lets
me - then as soon I let go, it jumps - well actually, more like fades
smoothly but very fast - down to the bottom again. And it stays there.
Interestingly, if I try to do this whilst I'm actually webcamming with
someone, and they're talking to me, when I drag that fader up I can
hear them fine - but as soon as I let go, boom it fades down to the
bottom, and I can't hear them :(
BTW, this problem happens not just with this one person, but with
anyone else I try to webcam with - so I'm pretty sure the problem's at
my end. I've also been careful to make sure I don't have any other
audio / webcam programs running at the same time etc. etc
any help gratefully received!
thanks
Philip
