Messenger and PC to PC telephone calls

hello,
I am really struggling here.
Myself and a colleague are trying to establish a PC to PC telephone
connection using headsets. Unfortunately whenever either calls the other we
hear the ringing tone and then, when the one called clicks "Accept" or
presses Alt+C, the connection is broken and we receive the message "You
have missed a call from ****".
I can't find anything in "Help" that actually helps.
Is it really possible to make these "free" telephone calls via Messenger or
is it a myth?
Can anyone explain in plain English what we are doing wrong please?
