I assume you are using Windows Live Messenger?
To correct this, shut down Messenger entirely by right-clicking on its icon in the
notification area and choosing Exit, then download and run
this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/remove_wlmpolicies.reg
Then try signing in again. It make take 30-40 seconds after signing in before they appear
online.

I have added a contact to my list however I cannot see whenever they log in.
On their end they have added me as a contact and can talk to me and see when
I am on line but I cannot see when they are on line. They have the same
messenger as I do.
