Windows Messenger doesn't have any sort of message history feature. Unless you specifically
clicked the File menu and chose Save As to save it before you close the window, the
conversation is gone.

However, if you had Messenger Plus! installed than it would've saved it, but you probably
would've known about that feature if you had Plus installed.

Now, MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger do have a built-in message history function.
If that's the client you're referring to then simply right-clicking the contact in the
contact list, choosing View and then Message History will bring it up, assuming the feature
was turned on.
