This really isn't a solution but a workaround. Have you tried simply not using Windows
Messenger and using Windows Live Messenger instead (http://get.live.com/messenger/overview) ?
If that's not an option for you, then obviously this could be the result of a few things.
Try unplugging any external devices (a webcam for instance) and seeing if that makes any
difference. Additionally, try unplugging your network cable (or if you're using wireless,
disable the adapter temporarily) and see if that has any effect.

Everytime Windows Messenger runs, it takes up 100% of my CPU., and my
computer goes slow.
I'm using a Windows XP Proffesional computer, and an AOL Net Gear (W111T) DSL.
