Removing Windows Messenger

Hi,

I need to install Messenger 5.1 on my XP Pro machine to use my companies
messenging system. Whenever I try to run the 5.1 msi it tells me that my
computer has a newer version of messenger so I must remove the old one
first. I have tried absolutely everything to remove (from unhiding it in the
sysoc.inf file then removing in add/remove) to hacking about in the registry
with information from other posts.... yes I have tried the vb script from
DougKnox and the group policy editor too. It keeps coming back - help!!!

.
