These are part of the Quick Launch toolbar. To turn it on, just right-click on an empty area
of the taskbar, choose Toolbars and then Quick Launch.

with every computer with MS Windows I've been on, there's been Shortcut
buttons in the lower left corner next to the Start button. However on this
new Dell I just got there isn't.
Are they hidden? Or do I just need to add them? I think they're just hidden
somehow though. I really miss that "shortcut to desktop" button :(
