Cannot login in messenger

Hi all, a friend of mine asked me to install and configure messenger on her
pc, but the thing is harder than I thought.
I subscribed an account and it works since I can use it from my pc, but from
her messenger I get a message that the service is not available. Running the
utility I discovered that everything works until it reaches the ports step,
where it stops. I suppose that a firewall could be the cause, but no
firewalls appear to be installed (nor antiviruses). Could be also the adsl
modem, but I don't have the manual and don't know how to confrigure it.
What do you guys think can cause that problem?
