Greetings,
It has been out of beta since June -- in fact, it's on the third build of the official
release.
This has been a suggestion many times and prior to MSN Messenger 6 is how file transfer
worked. To make sure this feedback is fed into the appropriate database you may want to
submit it here:

I have a question regarding the new MSN Beta 8.0. I realize that this is
still a beta, however - here is a suggestion.
When you are doing data transfers in a chat window between a user and
yourself, instead of having to scroll through the chat window to find out how
long or how far the data transfer is going to be, why not have it in the chat
window itself? Like, in an open area of the chat window? This causes less
hassle for your users to scroll through the chat window trying to find out at
what point the file was sent and what not? This is a suggestion to improve
MSN usage. I know I would be more than happier if this was set up with MSN,
it would make my life easier as me and my friends share files all the time.
