Greetings,
No, Windows Messenger has never had this capability (and never will, the product is no longer
being developed).
Just download and install Windows Live Messenger as it has this capability:

Is there a way to control status upon signin in Windows Messenger.
In MSMessenger, there was a way to do this, but when I upgraded,
it gave me Windiows Messenger. I am running Windows Messenger 5.1
A secondary annoyance is that Help->Help Topics does not work.
Nothing happens, not even an hourglass
