Does the num lock key share a function with another key?
If so, you need to press something like shift or some other modifier key to
access it.
If that still doesn't work, your keyboard might be defective.

my problem is that pressing the num lock key does not work. its on num
lock

Look for the "NumLk" key on your keyboard. It's probably part of another
key and will
require you to press Fn or Shift as a key combination to use it.
