I assume the entire application is "disappearing"? If so, what's really happening is that
it's crashing. Isolating the exact reason why could be extraordinarily difficult though --
if you don't mind losing your display pictures/emoticons, you could try rebuilding your
client cache.
To do so, firstly shut down Messenger if it's running by right-clicking its icon in the
notification area and clicking Exit. Then, click Start, then Run, enter:
%appdata%\Microsoft
and click OK. Then right-click the MSN Messenger and choose Delete.

I am using msn messenger 7.5 which has been working fine for months but
recently has started behaving in a strange way. It shuts itself off from
time to time for no apparent reason. The connection to the internet remains
but messenger decides to take a rest. Is there anything in the settings which
might be causing this and which I can adjust?
