Windows Messenger is so slow via ADSL

Summary: Windows Messenger works fine in the office and through low-speed
dial-up, but is impossibly slow through ADSL broadband.

I have a company provided laptop with a company standard
configuration.Windows XP professional, Windows Messenger 4.6 connected to a
company server, BlackIce software firewall.

In the office, connected to our office network, everything works absolutely
fine.
From home, I can use low-speed dial-up, VPN to my company network and
everything works absolutely fine. Slower for sure, but more than acceptable.

I normally use ADSL broadband at home. 2M in, 256k out. Connection is via a
combined ADSL modem router, connected to my laptop via ethernet.
I connect up my laptop, VPN to my company network and email, internet
browsing, everything works fine. Except for Windows Messenger. When I
sign-in to Messenger, it takes 30 minutes to respond and show my list of
contacts. Sometimes, a Messenger conversation works OK, mostly it is close
to unusable due to a slow response time. I only need Messenger for Instant
Messaging. No audio, video, file transfers, etc

I thought it might be my router which has a built-in firewall, but I think
I've disabled the firewall (I'm not a networking expert so can't be 100
percent sure), but I would have thought that if it was a firewall issue,
Messenger would not work at all, whereas it actually does work but
incredibly slowly.

I know other colleagues mostly have a similiar problem, but our desktop
support group have failed to find a solution.

Any ideas?
