Messenger e-mail rejections

A friend bought a laptop and I set up a hotmail e-mail address for her and
when she signs in to MS Messenger we can chat online. When it comes to
sending e-mail anything she cannot send anything, error messages pop up
saying the server may be down temporarily. I have tried sending e-mail to
her hotmail address and the messages go out and then I get message from the
postmaster telling me that delivery failed.

Is there something I did not set up for her? It seems strange that we can
chat online but not send e-mail.
