win messenger quits after accepting whiteboard

Does anyone have any experience setting up Windows Messenger to work
within a small LAN? I'm assuming that something to do with our LAN is
the cause of my problem. Every time I accept an invitation to
whiteboard, application sharing, or remote assistance, Messenger
immediately quits due to an unknown error. I temporarily disabled
firewall software to see if that fixed it, but it didn't. Any other
ideas?
