webcam messenger

I connected up a webcam (I'm actually using my Minolta Digital (DiMage X50)
and loaded the driver that came with the camera. When I am in MSMessenger
v7.5 the camera shows the picture jsut fine but it is really dark and had
'red'....none of the setting are accessable..is this a common problem? how
can I fix this? When I go to setup it states no webcam detected...what to
do next???
thanks
Arlene
