Communication properties

I almost always have voice distortions while communicating with my friends -
while they hear me usually fine. Could it be that the communication channels
for incoming and outgoing use different properties? I mean, is it possible
that the outgoing call use ( for example) 16 mono, while the incoming voice
uses 16 bit stereo?
