can see the volume level, but cant hear anything...thank you

I’m running XP - SP2, a 1mb AOL connection with 7.5 messenger. Although I
have had the same problem with msn 7 as well. I am unable to hear audio, I
can see the level move, accept the conversation but not able to hear. There
are no problems with anything else; it’s just the audio...

Can anyone help?? It would be very much appreciated
