Keyboard / Ink Input in Messenger 5.1

Interesting problem. Windows Messenger 5.1 launches, connects to my SIP
server, and I can receive messages. I imagine I could probably send them as
well, but I cannot get the chat windows to accept ANY keyboard / ink / even
emoticon input. I do not get an editing cursor (it remains the regular
arrow) when i hover over the text input field. The window changes shape when
i change to ink mode (gets bigger to accomodate drawing) but still, the
cursor just stays as an arrow.

Again, this doesn't appear to be a network issue, but a problem with giving
that field focus.

I have:
Tried reinstalling Messenger 5.1 - No joy
Tried installing older version of Messenger (5.0) but the installer tells me
that i have too new a version to do that.
Tried using Microsoft Communicator as a workaround, but my SIP server and it
are on different levels and can't talk.

Any ideas on how to correct this issue with Windows Messenger 5.1? My only
other option is for our corporate help desk to slam my machine, and you know
what a pain that is.
