unable to bring up conversation window from task bar

When I get an alert that a contact is online I get the notification by the
systen tray.
When I click on send an instant message I click on the person then ok but
nothing happens.
There is that persons name in the conversation window on the task bar but
when I click on it nothing happens, it either hihlights or unhighlights.
It will not open a window and am unable to write a message.
The only window I can restore down or up is the main windows messenger. The
converstion window will not restore.
Does anybody have a clue what the problem is?
I am only able to read the message briefly when it pops up by the clock.
