Messenger starts at random times

I have a weird problem...Windows Messenger is starting at what seem to be
completely random times. I have the options set to not start Messenger
(preferring to start it myself if and when I choose to). I boot up my
computer, use it for a while, then at some point, and seeminginly unrelated
to any particular activity, I will notice that it has started itself (icon in
the system tray).

I have read that Outlook Express can cause this, but I don't use Outlook
Express. Furthermore, if I try to exit, I get a message telling me that
something is using it's services, and I can't exit. I can, however, sign out.

Is there anyone out there who has experienced a similar phenomenon, and/or
can give me some ideas what might cause this behavior? I'm afraid it may
spyware or virus related, but scans for both are coming up clean. Thanks in
advance!
