messenger 6.2 and version 7

I have been using messenger along time and have upgraded each time a new
version came in. However, when I upgraded to version 7 nothing worked. What
I mean is that I went through the download page on msn and microsoft and did
all the downloads. Then after setup it wouldn't even load all-then it would
say (not responding). Therefore, I uninstalled it and downloaded messenger
6.2 again. The screen would load then it would not respond. I don't get it
what is going on???
