Messenger keeps asking me to setup credentials even with hotmail account

Messenger 7.0 keeps asking me to signup for credentials, even though I am
signing in with a hotmail account? I thought that the hotmail account was
automatically signed up? I do have a POP3 email account setup in Outlook
which I use for email, but I did not use this to sign in to Messenger 7.0
since I thought it would not accept it.

Why does it keep telling me to sign up for credentials--I used my hotmail
account's email address and password in the credentials screen.
