sorry. it's me again. i posted this message a few days ago,
but no-one replied. hopefully not because it's a hopeless
case, but because people didn't see it? anyway, if someone

HERE GOES:

while installing the new messenger version (and for some
reason, i can't install older versions either now!), error
code 1603 appears.

the event viewer tells me that Produkt: MSN Messenger 6.2
-- Fehler 1325. "(Diverses)" ist kein gültiger kurzer
Dateiname.

(i.e.) "Divers)" is not a valid short file name (i hope
that's correct translation.

also Event ID: 11325(no idea if this is of any use)
