SIP is the Session Initiation Protocol. It's a standard that was developed
for Instant Messaging/Real Time Communication and the associated features
that go with it. Generally a SIP server is used in a corporate environment
to provide secure Instant Messaging, presence awareness, etc. MSN, AOL, and
ICQ use proprietary protocols, if memory serves me correctly.
Several vendors have SIP servers out, including Microsoft. Microsoft's
product is called Microsoft Office Live Communications Server. The current
version is LCS 2003. LCS 2005 has been released to manufacturing and is set
to hit the distribution channel on or around December the 1st.
