Greetings Drew,
Yes, in order to get file transfers to send from behind your router, you'll need to engage
UPnP in the router. To do so, simply go into the router configuration (typically
http://192.168.2.1) and switch UPnP on (sometimes the Password tab, sometimes elsewhere,
depending on your model/firmware). You'll need to fully close Windows Messenger (right-click
the notification icon and choose Exit) and restart it for the change to be reflected in
Messenger.
To directly answer your question however, you can turn on and engage software Universal Plug
and Play support within XP by clicking Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components, and under Networking Services, make sure that Internet Gateway
Device Discovery and Control Client as well as UPnP is installed.
