I have a BEFSR41 ver 3. Linksys router. Your problem sometimes
happens to me. Often when I don't let windows run long enough before
logging in (I have a password setup). So sometimes I can get it enabled
by disabling the Local Aread Connection which on my machine shows
up just below the Internet Gateway. I wait a few seconds and then
re-enable the Local Area Connection; often this will trigger the
Internet Gateway icon to read enabled. Don't have 'hide your UpnP
devices enabled' which is to the left in Network Places under Network Tasks.

A few times I've had to start the computer again. I start the reboot process
then go to the router and unplug it about 15 seconds. Then I plug it in
before windows has finished rebooting.

In My Network Places you can right-click on your Internet Gateway
icon. Then select properties. Towards the bottom of that page is
the option "show icon in notification area" which I tick that checkbox.

I wait until I see the two monitor icon in the right hand corner of
my screen (systray) before launching Internet explorer. Though once
in awhile, just opening Network Connections will make the
Internet Gateway appear (also enabled).

My other machine doesn't do this (connected to same router etc.)
so it is caused I think by some program or setting I've got on
the faulty machine and not the other. The faulty machine also
won't let me open Help and Support and start Event Viewer or
Network Connections or Sound Recorder (apps) from the help
screen, and this also works on the other machine, or even if I
login as guest on the faulty machine.

IOW, waiting for everything to load, no hard disk activity light flashing,
seems to help. Make sure your UPnP is still enabled on the router.
In MSN Messenger 6.2 you will see under tools/ Options/Connection
at the bottom of page Advanced Connection Information
this must read upnp... and *not* non-upnp... Uninstall QoS.
SP2 installs the Window Firewall by default; --> Under Exceptions
make sure than the checkbox next to Msn Messenger is ticked.
